To Kyle McGrady, my father's uncle. Kyle was known as the "Hell's Canyon Mailman" in the 1930s and 40s as skipper of the riverboat Florence. Before the damming of the Snake River in Idaho, residents up-river in Hell's Canyon depended on Kyle to deliver their families, their livestock, and their mail safely through the treacherous rapids. The Florence was their only link to the outside world. Kyle's spirit of adventure, his courage, and his resolve, even after great personal sacrifice, I found an inspiration.
